Our Rainier facility has been referred to as the ‘hallmark’ of log yards. Nearly every week a different industry group visits the Rainier log yard to observe our operation. They are quick to notice the integration of rail service and barge/waterway service, and how effortlessly timber can move from one mode of transportation to another. They appreciate the large ‘decks’ of logs, sorted and stacked by customer, grade, and size. And they approve of the quick handling of inbound truck loads of logs – with the massive LeTourneau stackers unloading and reloading an entire truckload in one pick.
From the arrival of a truck to it being unloaded and back on the road, the operation is measured in minutes. This enviable turn-time accompanies a stellar safety record. Timber handling off rail cars or barges is done at the same pace, but in significantly greater volumes. Barges with more than 4 million board feet of timber have discharged in under ten hours, with the timber being reloaded to outbound rail cars the next day. Similarly, region specialty timber has been loaded outbound for coastwise mills – having arrived by both truck and rail.
Since 2007, the Rainier log yard has handled near 10,000 rail cars annually, eliminating nearly 35,000 truck-trips from our highways. And we do this every day. The combination of well maintained LeTourneau stackers and Cat shovel-loaders and well-trained operators is a model of efficiency. Annually this log yard has throughput more than 167,000,000 board feet of timber.
The Rainier log yard is impressive from more than 80 acres of paved surface that allow us to capture bark and wood chunks so they can be kept out of landfills. By keeping the bark and wood chunks clean, they can be used in secondary markets as bio mass fuel or soil and landscaping supplements.
